Frequently Asked Questions
Spring manufacturing combines material selection and precision fabrication to meet engineering specifications. Manufacturers work with a wide range of wire diameters using materials ranging from stainless steel to specialty alloys. Elyria Spring utilizes state of the art computerized machines with minimum wire diameters of .003 to a maximum diameter of .750. CNC coiling helps control critical parameters like free length, solid height, spring rate and dimensional repeatability. Variables such as pitch, diameter, and coil count are engineered to achieve specific load requirements, while a company with specialized expertise such as Elyria Spring & Stamping offers additional options include custom end configurations and surface treatments.
Spring material selection depends entirely on operating conditions and performance requirements. While music wire (ASTM A228) provides excellent tensile strength for general applications, specific environments may require alternatives. For example, 302/304 stainless steel or Inconel excel in corrosive environments, chrome silicon offers excellent temperature resistance and other alloys can offer superior fatigue resistance. These specialty materials such as Hastelloy(R) better handle demanding applications where the spring might encounter extreme conditions. Options for various platings and coatings can enhance surface properties of the spring.
